Complete in scope and self-contained, this course begins with compass and map and advances to navigation by the sun and stars, satellite navigation, and navigation by natural means. Course No. 360: Kayak and Small Boat Navigation

Learn to navigate a kayak or small boat using such navigation techniques as piloting, dead reckoning, distance off, determination of speed through water, depth soundings, and GPS. Navigation in currents, waves, and standing and reflection waves , as well as the U.S. Navigational Aids System will be covered. In class skills will be with a specially prepared chart of Eagle Creek. This course will allow one to navigate with confidence with the minimal amount of navigation instruments and with many tricks of the trade that only experienced navigators know. Basic knowledge of map and compass is required for this workshop.

Schedule & Fees: Begins at the Eagle Creek Nature Center for 3 hours of classroom instruction and then proceeds "seaward" for 3 hours of navigation on Eagle Creek Reservoir with navigation charts prepared specially for this event by instructors / cartographers at Otter Navigation & Wilderness School. On water practicum will be in an "orienteering style" using the navigation principles from the class Workshop limited to 25 participants. Fee: $50/person; costs include all workshop materials, plotting tools, and chart of Eagle Creek Reservoir. Kayak rentals are available for $10 extra. Light snacks and drink will be provided at workshop end with debriefing. This workshop is instructed by the navigation team at OTTER NAVIGATION & WILDERNESS SCHOOL (LLC). Recommended reading: "Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation" by David Burch.

Course Sagitta: Celestial Navigation

Learn to navigate by the sun, stars, and planets in this 2 day course from Inland Seas Education of Sutton's Bay Michigan. The first day will focus on sun navigation and the solution of the nautical triangle and it's application to determining a fix. The second day will proceed on with using the stars and planets to determine position. The course will give instruction in using the sextant and solving for position using H.O. 249. Knowledge of Piloting and Dead Reckoning needed. The second day will be spent at sea on a schooner.
